Statement


	











Through a nomadic practice rooted in personal and collective experiences of migration, I am developing a hybrid worldview that rethinks environmental change, migration, and cultural transformation. Working across painting, participatory projects, and game-based structures, I treat humans, non-humans, ecological systems, and cultural symbols as co-agents in meaning-making.


My practice began with investigations of personal migration experiences and family history, gradually expanding to explore collective experiences across diverse migrant communities—from Taiwanese diaspora to pan-Asian groups and refugees. A critical shift occurred in 2024 when I developed a speculative framework that positions all humans as potential migrants, dismantling the perception of migration as "others' problem." Inspired by Dutch dune ecosystems, I now integrate ecological fieldwork in the Netherlands and Taiwan with participatory knowledge gathered through board games and workshops.


Drawing from Asian and Western painting traditions, I create hybrid iconographies where cultural symbols, ecological observations, and speculative imagination intersect. My paintings function as sites where multiple forms of knowledge, human stories, ecological data, and mythological narratives intertwine. Through this approach, I aim to create spaces where alternative worldviews can be explored and rehearsed, while envisioning forms of coexistence.

Linhuei Chen (b. 1981) is a Taiwanese-Dutch artist based in Rotterdam whose nomadic practice explores migration, environmental change, and cultural transformation through a hybrid lens. Working across painting, participatory projects, and field research, Chen treats humans, non-humans, ecological systems, and cultural symbols as co-agents in constructing alternative worldviews.




Chen's work evolved from personal migration experiences to a speculative framework where planetary environmental change positions all humans as potential migrants. Inspired by Dutch dune ecosystems, she conducts ecological fieldwork integrating empirical observations with participatory knowledge gathered through board games and workshops. Drawing from Asian and Western painting traditions, Chen creates hybrid iconographies where scientific data, cultural memory, and speculative imagination generate new questions about coexistence.

Chen holds a BFA in Fine Art from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, and degrees in Engineering and Law. She has received grants from Mondriaan Fonds and Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie. Her work is in the collections of Fenix Museum of Migration and Lam Museum in the Netherlands and Cultura Ministry in Taiwan.&#38;nbsp;

In Memory of the 1953 North Sea Disaster

My fascination with dunes began during a trip to **Bergen aan Zee** in the Netherlands. For a fleeting moment, I thought I was climbing a mountain, only to realize that beneath my feet was sand. That brief illusion sparked my exploration of dunes. The deeper I delved, the more I felt compelled to understand the great flood of 1953 in the Netherlands. Who would have thought that in such a highly developed country, not so long ago, a disaster claimed the lives of nearly two thousand people? From the protection of dunes to the Delta Works, Dutch culture has been profoundly shaped by this history.

Like the butterfly effect, could the flood that struck between January 31 and February 1, 1953, have been the true seed of this body of work?

While researching historical records, I came across letters written by children who were temporarily evacuated from their homes. Besides sending reassurances to loved ones, they included small drawings of the situation they experienced. Because nearly all visual records of that time were in black and white, these children’s simple sketches offered rare traces of color for me to follow.

Those children of 1953 are now in their seventies or eighties. I remember when I first arrived in the Netherlands, Dutch friends and relatives would explain the dikes, the waterworks, and why all children must learn to swim. They always mentioned the history of 1953. Living in this country, we often feel secure, yet I remind myself not to forget the lessons of that history.

Artist’s notes:


GROW A GARDEN




七月時注意到小孩在玩一個新的線上遊戲，是2025年在Roblox上最流行的遊戲：Grow a Garden。因為自己目前也對於”遊戲”有很大的研究興趣，所以我在小孩的幫忙下，在Roblox上開了一個帳號，我在平台上的名字叫做Oolabu。就如遊戲名稱，這個遊戲就是讓玩家在虛擬的空間裡被分配了一塊農地，然後開始在農地上種各式的蔬果，收成的蔬果可以賣錢，再用賺到的錢買到新的種籽或是各種工具，不段的升級。其實從小自己也是很愛這種種菜、開餐廳的小遊戲，所以可以說是很開心的參與這個遊戲。小孩常告訴我一些有用的消息，例如什麼工具該買，跟什麼特殊的種子正在商店裏限時販售。



正好去年就計劃著今年要在家的陽台跟屋頂種菜，從四月開始先在室內的小型温室開始種植一些蔬菜還有可以用來做為切花的觀賞植物。



以下是所種植的清單：


韮菜（是去年和網友買到的菜苗）


蕃茄：大蕃茄與櫻桃蕃茄品種


香菜


辣椒 


碗豆/荷蘭豆


小黃瓜



選擇的條件是：


1. 好種植，不大需要照顧 （low maintenance) 


2. 家裡固定有在吃的蔬果：蕃茄、羅勒、香菜、辣椒 


3. 可以拿來當切花： 茴香


4. 自己很愛吃但在荷蘭不好買或是很貴的：韮菜


5. 大部份為一年生植物，所以明年想要換不同的植物也可以。



（為了怕出遠門時植物缺水，今年還設置了灌溉系統。）




不知不覺，我開始同時在實體及虛擬的世界種菜，在餐桌上，我和小孩開始把虛擬世界裡的蔬菜以及運作方式的動機和價值觀拿來討論餐桌上看到的蔬菜。我開始著迷於思考且擺盪在實體和虛擬種菜之間。我瘋狂地，忍不住地覺得這是一種陰謀，陰謀這個字眼太過負面，我瘋狂地開始認為，玩這個遊戲這件事，其實是對這些小孩未來生活的訓練：這個遊戲設計了許多動機，在2025年讓小孩著迷於種菜，學習一些線上種植技能。這不就是我對於人類遷移到新地球的其中一個瘋狂想像/假設之一嗎？ （人類遷移到新地球後，必需依賴温室生活，人類需要大量的植物來調節新地球的環境，人類透過在温室裡的操作，對室外的機器人提出指令種植植物。）




在這個遊戲中，在玩家離線時，蔬菜仍會持續的生長，玩家永遠不用担心植物死亡的風險。


玩家也有機會購買寵物，如：蜜蜂、麻糬貓，或是運氣超極好的玩家如我，在超級低的概率下，獲得會下金蛋的鵝！這些寵物各有其功能，有餵養的狀態下會長大，但沒有也不會死去。

你知道在現實世界中，已經有國家還有公司把種子送上外太空接，暴露在太空輻射線中，期待種子會像中樂透般產生合適的變種，可以用來對抗酷峻的生存條件，用來對付地球上愈來愈嚴重的沙漠化現象？

這個遊戲中，充滿了各式各樣的”事件”，像是刮風下雨、沙塵暴、寒流、禪、微光(glimmering)，這些事件也不會導致植栽的死亡，反而會讓某些蔬果產生變種，提高了其收生的價植。好像是這些植物受到了事件影響變種後反而成為更強的物種一樣。

***蕃茄***



隨著玩遊戲的經驗值提高，蕃茄這個植物很快的成為對玩家來說很沒有價植的作物 （賣一顆蕃茄的價格低於100 sheckles，我最貴的作物價植大約是大於10,000,000,000 sheckles。 Sheckle是這個遊戲的貨幣系統）。



但是，10 billions sheckles，到底提供了我什麼價值？



而在實際的世界中，經過了半年，蕃茄終於紅了（在虛擬的世界只要幾分鐘），我也依一家四口的飲食需求，收成了好幾次。 這些蕃茄變成了： 沙拉、捲餅、酪梨醬、蕃茄炒蛋還有蕃茄牛肉麵。省出了幾趟去超市的時間，跟大約15歐元的蕃茄購買成本（似乎還離我所有投入的資金尚遠）。在這半年，我需要播種、在回台灣前請朋友幫忙照顧小菜苗、移株、固定澆水與施肥，看似勞動的付出過程，但其實也同時提供我很大的療癒感。



在書寫的此時，Ｇrow a Garden這個遊戲的熱潮已漸漸退去，我想很快的我也會跟小孩一樣停止登入這個遊戲，但明年春天後我一定會去我的陽台看看有沒有蕃茄苗偷偷長出來。

When Linhuei Chen (1981) moved to the Netherlands, she developed a fascination for the sand dunes. They reminded her of the mountains in her native Taiwan, even though they are also entirely different.&#38;nbsp;In that sense they touch on a core theme in Chen’s work: how migrants search for recognizable elements in a new environment.&#38;nbsp;And also how this can cause them to experience feelings of both security and alienation.&#38;nbsp; 

For the multimedia project A Sci-Fi Story About Migration (2024-ongoing) Chen developed a unique working method. Her paintings, assemblages, and sculptures are often based on workshops during which participants play games designed by her.&#38;nbsp;These games focus on how different cultures can coexist, today, but especially in the future.&#38;nbsp;In order to make the conversations about these future scenarios as inclusive as possible, she consciously involves people from various migrant groups in these workshops. 

The tryptic&#38;nbsp;Bureau of Dunes Landscape Planning (2025), which Chen is showing at Prospects, resembles a science-fiction story. We see characters from different cultural backgrounds discussing future scenarios and make plans to fight climate change.&#38;nbsp;What will the dune landscape look like in the future?&#38;nbsp;How can we protect the landscape?&#38;nbsp;And what will happen if it cannot be saved?&#38;nbsp; 

Chen paints in oils on canvas. Although her style and technique are strongly influenced by Western painting, in her more recent canvases she increasingly incorporates elements from Japanese and Chinese art.&#38;nbsp;While painting, she thus not only reflects on her own cultural identity, but also on possibilities for cultural exchange and hybridity.&#38;nbsp;

Since the end of 2023, I have been exploring the idea of viewing humanity as a migratory species. I began developing a sci-fi narrative set in part within the coastal dunes of the Netherlands, imagining a future where climate change forces humanity to choose between staying on Earth or migrating to another planet. Through speculative fiction and imagination, I seek to explore the role of culture and memory in human life under such circumstances and the potential phenomena that may arise. This exhibition marks my first attempt to translate this sci-fi narrative into painting. The story begins in the dunes, where shifting perspectives immerse the viewer in a journey—drifting from afar and arriving at this unfamiliar landscape for the first time. The experience unfolds as an invitation to speculate and explore the surroundings. Blending reality and surrealism, the work provides subtle hints and open-ended spaces for imagination. This is a story without a fixed plot; instead, I invite viewers to navigate through dunes, greenhouses, capsules, memory exchanges, games, and acts of observation—crafting their own narratives along the way.

About the ExhibitionWhile creating these exhibited works, besides echoing the sci-fi story of interstellar migration I’m currently developing, I followed a concept in mind:“A mountain is not a mountain; a moon is not a moon; a flower is not a flower.”This concept stemmed from my experience climbing the seashore dunes in the Netherlands, mistaking them for mountains. At that time, I felt a sense of displacement, but from then on, the dunes became substitutes for mountains. While in the Netherlands, I invested my emotions for mountains into the dunes, connecting me and my homeland.It seems that migrants in a new country cannot escape from such a fate. It’s as if we gradually understand and adapt to the new environment through analogies between new things and memories of our homeland. I found a similar phenomenon in human space exploration: Saturn’s moon, Titan, has landscapes identical to Earth’s and could be a potential option for human habitation in outer space. Scientists use terms like mountains, seas, and lakes to describe Titan’s geographical features, but its composition is entirely different, such as methane. Would a flower brought to outer space undergo a qualitative change and still be considered a flower? If we were to move to other planets, would we also find a dimly lit celestial body resembling the moon to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival?The recurring imagery of the memory capsule symbolises the preservation of landscapes and cultures that I will be reminiscing about when they do not exist on the new Earth humans emigrate to in the form of memories.

Since 2020, I have been developing a project called Memory Diaspora. I depict a memory world where consciousness and subconsciousness are stored and evolve freely, where memories exist as a diaspora. I collect people’s memories about a specific thing in each series to construct this world. I use the objects/things to which people with different cultural backgrounds can relate as the research mediums to understand memories, migration, experiences of encountering a new culture and how they interact to form cultural hybridity.&#38;nbsp;
The three series are: Reminiscence Objects, Home food and Plantae&#38;nbsp;They are all on-going projects.&#38;nbsp;

Steresocopic image forming process as the metaphor for the formation of cultural hybridity&#38;nbsp;




Having left her homeland Taiwan to live in Europe already more than 15 years ago, Linhuei Chen realised that she constantly compares things between different cultural experiences. For example, when she joins a Christmas dinner, it seems as if she is just enjoying her food and the conversations with other people, but at the same time she thinks about how she celebrated Christmas back in Taiwan: with her friends instead of with her own family. She now understands the role and meaning of&#38;nbsp; Christmas dinner in Western culture: rather than a party with friends, it is a gathering with family members. This has triggered her memories about the Lunar Year family gathering, and led to a feeling of homesickness. 

Compared to people with a singular cultural background, people with transcultural experiences have different cultural references in their minds when they undertake any activities. We physically live in one locality at a specific moment, so we actually compare our current experiences with those in our memories. For the artist, it is as if she uses a telescope to look at the past in Taiwan with one eye while examining her life in the Netherlands with a magnifying glass with the other. The vision/mental imagery from two eyes merges in her mind and forms the third imagery. In her opinion, this is how cultural hybridity happens in people’s minds. 

In 2018, when Chen lived in London, on a Saturday morning, she went to the famous Portobello market, where she found a Holmes stereoscope from a vendor who sold all kinds of vintage cameras. She was very fascinated by the 3D effects created by this optical viewer. On a stereoscopic card, people can see two similar images placed next to each other. When we look at them through the lenses, these two images merge into one through binocular vision processing in our brain. For her, the whole viewing process is like an analog of the forming process of cultural hybridity in our minds, especially because forming the third imagery requires the visual function done by our brain, which creates a more engaging imprint in our memories. 

During her residency (Winter Sessions 2022) at V2_, Chen started experimenting with the visual forming process in our brain and how it reacts to different combinations of images with all kinds of colour effects and forms. Further on, she used images of popular Taiwanese and Dutch food which are similar to each other. The similarity of the food tricks our brain to see a new mixt food more easily. 

In this project, Chen integrates modern technology with the classic stereoscope to extend the possibility of her visual research: the source of the stereo-image is not limited to small, two-dimensional still images anymore. This setup allows the viewer to engage and experience the stories the artist conveys through different dimensions of media and multiple sensations. 

At the end of this residency, Chen made two videos that reflect her life experiences about the past and now, with the stereoscopic images. In both videos, you can see the artist is putting Chinese Opera make-up on while the music of the Chinese instrument gong is playing. It is an improvising performance in which she transforms into the Handsome Monkey King, who is a famous character in the classical Chinese epic Journey to the West - a tale about spiritual enlightenment, heroism, and a journey in search of the holy teachings of the living Buddha. Different from the Western stories about going on a journey, where the heroes fight external challenges to reach their destinations, it is a journey for the Monkey King to conquer his sins to reach the West (central Asia and the Indian subcontinent): an internalised salvation. This performance is a key element that connects other autobiographical footage of this two channel video installation and symbolises her transformation during her journey to the West.

The Third Space
Third Space is the concept developed by Homi Bhabha to describe the hybrid cultural identity which emerges from the interweaving elements of different cultures. Bhabha posits hybridity as a liminal or in-between space, where the ‘cutting edge of translation and negotiations’ occurs (Bhabha 1996). During the process of this artistic research, I realised that all the segments in my works are a journey in the third-space, where my native culture and memories meet with my experience of Western culture. They collide and merge with each other, while I examine with a magnifying glass the Western culture with one hand and examine my past with a monocular with my other hand. I navigate in this space to find answers to questions of who am I and where is home to which I could return?
